Looking Back: A Great Opportunity

Looking back, do you think the whole experience of going through the auditions and being on the show was good for you on a personal level?
Well, gosh, I think any experience good or bad that happens in your life for whatever reason is a good thing. I'm a big believer in "Everything happens for a reason." Everything happens to take you to that next place, to improve difference parts of who you are. For me, I think this has been a great character-building experience.
It's certainly been an eye-opener. My husband always says I'm naive, and I definitely was naive in that situation (laughs) and now I know what he was talking about. I'm the kind of person who just always wants to see the good in everybody, the best in everybody.
Graceful Exit      I hope that doesn't change. I really do like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I think that I will be a little bit more wary of people's motivations now. That's what I've learned out of all of this - that all is not what it seems with some people at times, especially in those environments. You do have to be maybe a little bit more realistic about certain people.
But probably the best thing that came out of this for me personally is that it just made me so much more determined. When you're kind of beaten down like that, it makes you more determined to be successful.

Do you think your exposure on the show will help your career?
It already has. It's already started to open doors because people in the industry know a lot more about me now. I have a bigger fan base than I had before I started. So, yeah, I think it's going to be very beneficial for getting to the next level. Whether I get a deal or do something independently, I feel confident that my experience will help me be successful.

What would you tell others who might want to give something like Nashville Star a shot?
Actually, I've already had people ask me that very question. When people ask me about going on Nashville Star, I say "Do it! It's a great opportunity."
Unfortunately, the show plays on the fact that it's a great opportunity, so you have to go into with awareness and probably a lot more caution than I had about it. Keep your wits about you. Be careful what you say and be careful what you do.
Personally, I think everybody should do what Jody Evens did; he just slept the whole time. (laughs) They couldn't pull anything on him because he was never there. My husband thought that was a great strategy!
Seriously, I do not regret going on that show at all. I think it is a great opportunity...and I tell people that if you have talent, that talent is going to shine through for everybody to see, and that's what really matters.
Don't be sucked in by the "reality TV" side of it. Just be yourself, let your talent shine and let the people make up their own mind whether they like what you do or not. If you can do that, it's a great experience.
