The Stylists Take Control

It sounds like you only had so much control over your song choices. Was it the same story with your wardrobe and other parts of your presentation?
With our song choices, you could submit ten songs and tell them the one that you really wanted to sing . Then you'd cross your fingers for the rest of the week and hope that that was the one you'd end up doing. A lot of things came into play - like whether you could get the rights from the publisher to do it, whether the producers okayed it for the flow of the show, whether they even liked the song.
It was the same way with our wardrobe and our hair. You could make suggestions about things you would prefer to wear. There were a few times in the beginning where I felt like "Heck, I just have way too much makeup on. I'm not used to this!" Tamika's experimental Episode 1 styling.
So they did tone it down for me, but you didn't always get a say in want you wanted to wear. They'd bring stuff in and take snapshots, which they'd send out to LA. Then they'd come back and say, "No, you're not wearing that. Try this one." Sometimes you were stuck wearing something you really didn't want to wear in the beginning.
That happened to me a few times, but then I'm not one to put a lot of emphasis on what I wear. I wanted to put a lot more of my time and effort into my song choice and preparing for my performance. What I was wearing would always be very much last on my list.
It wasn't as important to me as I probably should have made it. The other girls would be shopping for days and I'd say "I ain't going! Just bring a bunch of stuff in and I'll find something, I guess."

That's interesting because out of all the contestants, you were the one who changed your look the most from week to week.
Well, you have to understand that the stylists on the show were very fun, but these girls have a pretty "way out" fashion sense...and if they get the Tamika's chance to dress someone the way they want to and to experiment, man, they're going to run with it. I think that's what they did with me. (laughs) "Oh, she doesn't care. Hey, you'd look really cool in this, and let's put your hair like that." And I just said, "Yeah, whatever."
As long as I didn't look in the mirror and think "Oh, I look really goofy," it didn't bother me that much. To me, the important aspects were my voice and my performance on those nights. That may have been one of my mistakes on the show, but I have no regrets about it. It apparently kept people very entertained - "Oh my gosh, look what she's wearing this time!"
